New Brunswick is the largest peat producer in Canada. Approximately 70% of commercial-grade horticultural peat deposits are found on Crown lands, and are therefore subject to the New Brunswick Quarriable Substances Act. About 80% of peat currently being extracted in New Brunswick comes from Crown lands. Therefore, the peat industry plays an important role in our economy.

Over the years, the Government of New Brunswick has conducted an in-depth review of all provincial policies affecting the peat industry, and has adopted a series of measures providing a framework for that industry. In 2001, the Province of New Brunswick began implementing a comprehensive peatland policy. This provincial Peat Mining Policy deals in particular with activities associated with adding value and assessing potential environmental impacts from peat extraction, as well as obligating peat producers to develop reclamation plans. Consequently, the peat industry must now comply with new regulations and specific requirements with regard to harvesting.
