The New Brunswick Aquarium and Marine Centre (NBAMC), located in Shippagan, New Brunswick, houses the CZRI’s Aquaculture Pavilion and Aquaculture Laboratories.

The Aquaculture Pavilion’s research facilities include a 200-m2 dry laboratory and 14 wet laboratories with a total area of 600 m2. With some 225 different-sized tanks, these laboratories are equipped with temperature control and photoperiod systems. Our aquaculture facilities are supplied with fresh or salt water, oxygen and air, as well as carbon dioxide, as needed. A generator, and alarm, data acquisition, water distribution and treatment systems, as well as several water storage tanks, enable us to ensure a constant supply of quality fresh and salt water. 

These wet laboratories are grouped into four hatcheries (molluscs, crustaceans, freshwater fish and marine fish) and three nurseries. A laboratory equipped with three 45-m3 pools houses our marine fish spawners. We also have two phytoplankton cultivation rooms and a zooplankton cultivation room, providing for the quasi-commercial production of algae, rotifers and artemia.

The CZRI Aquaculture Pavilion molluscs hatchery is a unique facility in New Brunswick that was established in 1989 through a collaborative project between the New Brunswick Aquarium and Marine Centre and the Université de Moncton, Shippagan Campus. This project provided for the addition of wet laboratories reserved for the reproduction and hatching of several species of mollusc. A room reserved for the cultivation of algae completes the facility.

Since 2002, the CZRI Aquaculture sector has been working with the Maritime Fishermen’s Union (MFU) and Homarus Inc. (non-profit organization managed by the MFU with several public and private sector partners) in order to find a solution to the ongoing decline in lobster (Homarus americanus) catches in some southern regions of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The CZRI supports the production of stage IV lobster larvae for stocking purposes and the development of simple and economical hatchery practices to enable community fisher groups to pursue their own stocking efforts. In 2004 and 2005, our research work led to the production of more than 115 000 juvenile lobsters in experimental sites in New Brunswick. The CZRI Aquaculture Pavilion’s marine finfish rearing facilities are used for this production.

The Aquaculture Pavilion’s freshwater rearing laboratories have the flexibility to offer a complete production cycle that includes incubation, fry rearing, grow-out and maintenance of spawners. We also have a rearing site at the Acadian Peninsula Campus of the Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick in Caraquet. These sites hold a certificate of fish health under the Fish Health Protection Regulations (FHPR) pursuant to the Government of Canada’s Fisheries Act.

Our marine fish rearing facilities provide for the quasi-commercial production of juveniles. In addition to incubation and larval rearing laboratories, three 45 m3 recirculating tanks are available for maintaining spawners. The CZRI’s research and technical team is currently working on haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and cod (Gadus morhua), two choice species for aquaculture diversification in New Brunswick.
